For the past two years, I’ve gone on business trips to Kalamazoo, MI. It’s a wintery college town south of Michigan that is a surprisingly big growing hub for young entrepreneurs. It’s also where Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Sorry to Bother You) attended college.
Although the name doesn’t offer more than a vague memory of that old saying, “From Kalamazoo to Timbuktu,” the city will prove they are more. From a variety of local breweries to original eateries from all over the world, there is a certain respect for a community that is very rarely found elsewhere.
In some aspects, Kalamazoo reminds me a lot of my hometown. We have similar landscaping and an odd mix of downtown charm. Kzoo is just significantly colder and cheaper in rent, which makes everyone in the Greater Nashville area faint in disbelief. (Believe it or not, it’s like a 600% difference.)
Perhaps not the best place to visit during the winter if you are sensitive to the cold, Kalamazoo caters to a niche of people longing to experience a little bit of everything.
